Luxor’s Iconic Temples Get Major Restoration and Tourism Upgrades

The restoration and upgrade projects aim to improve site accessibility for tourists. Officials’ Statements on Luxor Temples’ Upgrades  

The secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities has said that the restoration process for the Luxor temples will be carried out by the specialized, fully trained teams that will use the latest scientific methodologies for the preservation of the historical archaeological sites at Luxor. These advance techniques will maintain the historical integrity of the temples and monuments.  

Hisham El-Leithy added that the recent inspections at the temples in Luxor have stated the prioritization of development works that were needed for a long time. He highlighted that at the Karnak temple complex, the electronic surveillance center will be installed with modernized equipment and automated systems. The second phase of the restoration includes security expansion across the Karnak temple complex.  

He also stated the developments at the Luxor Temple; he said that the focus is to expand the entrance hall approximately from 110 to 250 square meters. Also, six new entrance gates are going to be added to manage the issues like congestion. At the Luxor Temple, additional developments include the installation of the advanced screening devices and modern electronic ticketing devices to streamline the entry for the visitors, which would also improve the operational efficiency and meet the international standard of tourism. 

The head of the Restoration and Archaeological Projects Sector, Mr. Moamen Othman, has said that final design plans for the projects are about to be complete. About the implementation, he said that they are scheduled for May and August due to low tourist traffic in Luxor. During these months, the temple’s current exit gate will manage the entrance as other gates will be temporarily closed.  

To enhance the experiences of the tourists, the planned developments include expansion of shaded seating areas at different parts of the temple, the upgradation of the entrance façade that is also aligned with the historical characters, and enchantments in the ticketing systems for smooth operations. 

Developments on the West Bank of the Luxor  

The mortuary temple of Hatshepsut in Deir El-Bahari, located on the west banks of Luxor, includes the upgrade of the visitor center. The list of developments includes the installation of the ticket gates and advanced screening machines for the baggage. Also, there are plans of installing an interactive exhibition hall where the temple’s history and significance can be presented using modernized display technologies for an interactive experience at the historical site in Egypt. 

The plans of the restoration also have a compehensive upgrade of on-site services near the temple. It includes the renovation of bazaars and local stores and the replacement of the flooring to enhance the walking experiences for the tourists. 

At the Temple of Seti I in Luxor, restoration plans have focused on cleaning and removing debris. Also, the stains of birds’ droppings enhance the original look of inscriptions and decorative elements. The structural reinforcements, including new pathways for visitors, are also going to be installed. Alongside all this work, the signboard and entrance facilities are going to be improved under this recent restoration project of Luxor temples.
