Archaeologists Uncover Hidden Chambers in Pyramid of Menkaure
The archaeologists have recently uncovered a hidden internal space in the Pyramid of Menkaure. It is the smallest of all the three pyramids in the Giza complex. This new discovery and research reports have added a new layer to the long-standing mystery about the surroundings of ancient pyramids developed by Egyptian engineers, as well as to the construction of the pyramids.
The research work was conducted with a collaboration of Cairo University and the Technical University of Munich that works under the broader ScanPyramids-style investigative approach. The goal of the research was to map the hidden structure, possibly a chamber within the Menkaure pyramids, by making effective use of modern science. This recent discovery also supports the story suggested by researcher Stijn van den Hoven in 2019 about the existence of the second entrance.
In 2015, the ScanPyramids had already used the modern technologies to explore the pyramids, and then finally in 2023, they found an undiscovered corridor at the Great Pyramid of Giza, Khufu’s pyramid.
To find the structures, advanced, non-invasive scanning technologies were used by archaeologists. These modern-era research practices include georadar, ultrasound, and electrical resistance tomography. All these tools have allowed the researchers to examine the pyramids’ internal structures without damaging the ancient monument, which is also part of a UNESCO World Heritage site with the Pyramid of Khufu as its core.

During the research the scientists have also examined two previously known voids (air-filled chambers). These are hidden behind the pyramid’s outer eastern façade; they are relatively small cavities located just a few feet beneath the stone structure’s surface. One of the most intriguing aspects of the discovery is a possible connection to a hidden entrance, which is still not found.
The researchers have long suspected that an undiscovered entrance gate is there, especially on the eastern side of the pyramid. It is not just a misconception; the unpolished granite blocks that draw the attention of the archaeologists were found there. Here the newly detected void has strengthened this theory about its position behind the smooth granite surface. It is similar to one entrance, as on the northern side, the stone on the eastern side proves that these chambers may be part of a sealed or an unfinished route in the monument.
Till now the experts have classified the recent findings as “anomalies” or voids, not as full rooms or chambers. For that, further research will be required to determine the exact measurements of the structure and its connection to the overall pyramid of Menkaure. However, the researchers are cautious about the premature conclusion, as the exact functions of these voids, possibly structural, symbolic, or functional, have remained unknown till now. The researchers have advised and concluded that additional scans would be required to validate the findings.
Pyramid of the Menkaure
The smallest of the three Giza pyramids was built around 2510 BCE during the Old Kingdom in Egypt for the pharaoh Menkaure. It is located at the southwest of the Giza pyramids of Khufu and Khafre in the complex and usually visited by travelers while exploring the other pyramids and the sphinx. The pharaoh Menkaure is the son of pharaoh Khafre during the 4th century.
It is a royal tomb designed for the afterlife purposes and burial rituals for the pharaoh. It has a height of 65-66 meters, which is around 215 feet, significantly smaller than the Pharaoh Pyramid of Khafre. The pyramid is part of a complex that also includes three smaller queen pyramids named G3-a, G3-b, and G3-c at the Giza.
Conclusion
The detection of the hidden voids inside the pyramid of Menkaure is not only a technical breakthrough for researchers but also a reminder for the archaeologists and history lovers that ancient monuments are still the active field of discovery. With evolving technologies, the research will be vaster and can be conducted in-depth.
