Introduction 

The Suez Canal in Egypt is a man-made waterway that is located in the northeastern part of Egypt and connects the African continent with Asia. It is a major canal that connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, constructed to reduce the time of traveling between the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The canal crosses along the Isthmus of Suez, a strip of land separating Africa and Asia.

Before the canal, till 1869, the famous Cape of Good Hope was a way for ships that used to sail around southern Africa to reach South Asia, a journey thousands of kilometers longer than the Suez Canal. It reduced journey distance from the Arabian Sea to approximately 8,900 kilometers; before the canal, the journey was around 2 months longer. After the construction of the canal, it took 2 weeks to connect the Mediterranean Sea to the North Indian Ocean. 

What country owns the Suez Canal today?

The Suez Canal is owned by the SCA (Suez Canal Authority) and regulated by the Egyptian government. In 1956, it was nationalized under the rule of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who played a major role in transferring the control of the canal from the British-French Suez Canal Company to Egyptian authorities. Today, it is maintained and regulated by the SCA and ensures the safe and secure passage of ships through the maritime routes. 

The navigation fees are the Suez Canal’s major contribution to Egypt’s economy. Waterways are strictly under the control of SCA, and they are managed by specialized forces. The canal plays a vital role and generates significant revenue and is represented as Egypt’s most important economic asset. 

Historically, the project was aimed at reducing the travel time of ships and at making global trade easy between Asia, Europe, and the Western world. Over time, world trade has expanded, making the canal an important international maritime route for trade. It carries a significant percentage of the international trade; its importance is also enhanced with the growth of oil transportation from the Middle East to Europe and North America. 

In 2014, the idea of the expansion of the Suez Canal by the Egyptian government also helped the country and reduced the waiting time for the ships. The project included new shipping lanes and improvements along parts of the canal route. These upgrades allow more vessels to pass through the canal each day. On 6 August 2015, new routes of the canal were opened for the functioning of the ships. 

Can a cruise ship go through the Suez Canal?

Yes, the cruise ship can sail through the Suez Canal primarily between the Mediterranean and Red Seas. It allows passengers to witness the eastern desert of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt from the decks. These cruises are different as they do not have such shore excursions as the Egypt river cruises have; they are larger sailing vessels used widely for transportation or to experience the luxury of large cruise ships.
