The earliest independent flag of Egypt was flown under the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, and the country was part of the Ottoman Empire from around 1805 to 1922. After the famous Urabi revolt in 1822, British forces occupied the country, and this revolution reached its peak in 1919. Then, finally, in 1922, the UK forces declared Egypt free; at that time, the flag had three stars that represented three territories: Egypt, Nubia, and Sudan. These stars also represent the religious communities of that time: Muslims, Christians, and Jews. 

Then, with the rise of Egyptian free movement in 1953, the political union of regional communities named Egypt the United Arab Republic in 1958. That was the time Egypt got a break from the Ottoman-inspired flags, and the unique Eagle of Saladin was added to the flag with three color bands: red, white, and black. When, in 1958, Syria united with Egypt, the flag had three colored bands with two stars representing regional union. Though the union was for a small period, it ended in 1961.  

After the revolutions and several diplomatic decisions, Egypt was officially named the Arab Republic of Egypt in 1972. During this time, Egypt was under the federation with Syria, which was then officially dissolved in 1977, and by 1984, Egypt had its own flag with three colored bands, red, white, and black, with the Eagle of Saladin in gold in the center.
