Egypt Launches Digital Arrival and Departure System for Egyptians at Cairo Airport Starting 11 April

The Ministry of Aviation has stated that Egypt will stop the paper documentation and control cards for Egyptian passengers for departure and arrival at Cairo International Airport, which is coming into effect from 11 April 2026, Saturday, and replacing them with digital mediums and documentation systems. 

This digitalization at the Cairo International Airport was actually a part of a broader approach, which is the shifting to digital systems and also aiming to introduce simpler travel procedures that will reduce processing time of the documentation and overall improve passenger experience and movement through airport terminals.  

The civil aviation minister, Sameh Elhefny, also said that this decision reflects the clear policy, which is focusing on improving services for travelers at the Cairo International Airport. This step of making the process digital will also increase the efficiency of operations, which will align with the global aviation trends. Also additionally, the ministry has stated that after the international airport in Cairo, the digital arrival and departure systems are likely to be introduced across the country in the next phase of investment and development of the aviation industry in Egypt. 

While addressing the new update, the minister of civil aviation, Sameh Elhefny, also regarded the support of security authorities and especially highlighted their coordination, which made it possible for the system upgradations. It reflects as a joint collaboration project that is contributing to the act of modernization of the airport arrival and departure operations.  

In many countries across the world, the digitalization of procedures at the airports was established decades ago, and they stopped using paper cards a long time ago. At those airports, the functions are replaced by passport-based border checks or by the electronic passenger data systems, which are completely automated and enhance the efficiency. 

As part of its move toward a more digital border system, the UK got rid of paper landing cards for arriving passengers in 2019. Travelers no longer have to fill out arrival forms. Instead, they go through automated eGates, have their passports checked, and have their travel information checked through Advance Passenger Information (API). The UK Border Force is in charge of these processes to make border control easier and more efficient.

A lot of countries in the Schengen Area had already stopped using paper arrival cards years before this. Several Nordic and Western European countries got rid of them between 2008 and 2011 and replaced them with electronic border systems. Later, Schengen members from Southern and Eastern Europe joined. By the middle of the 2010s, most of them had moved away from paper documents as part of larger efforts to modernize. 

By 2015, the paper arrival receipts and departure cards have also completely vanished from the airports in the Schengen countries; it stands as an inspiration for the rest of the countries. They use advanced systems, as the border authorities have shifted to digital biometric passports and airline data and integrated them with national databases, which made the whole procedure of arrival and departure easy and time-saving. 

Now Egypt is also confidently and with proper measures ready to shift from paper documents to digital procedures for its first airport, which is Cairo International Airport. Passengers will be introduced to the new system and procedures through clear instructions mentioned at the airport; it’s a first step towards the transformations to digital airports in Egypt.
