Operations Begin on the East Nile Monorail Connecting Cairo and the New Capital

In Cairo, on 20 March, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi inaugurated the East Nile Monorail, which is 56.5 km. It acts as a green transit link, especially designed to reduce congestion on the road and overall improve the quality of daily community for the general public.

The Cairo Monorail has two major lines: one is the East Nile Line, and the other is the West Nile Line. Now the East Nile Monorail is inaugurated, which is around 56.5 km long and passes 22 stations. It’s a crucial transportation measure that connects Cairo to the new capital.

About the Inauguration

On Friday, the president and families of the fallen Egyptian army personnel boarded a train from a station named Al-Fattah Al-Alim Mosque and passed through the R1 and R2 resident areas, finally reaching the financial district. Also, the transportation minister of Egypt, Kamal al-Wazir, has said that this monorail works as a “civilization leap” in the commuting facilities of the country. In addition, he also shed light on eco-friendly transportation and stated that with this monorail, the state has the direction to introduce more networks to reduce congestion and fuel consumption.

About the Monorail

While describing the new network, he also talked about the Monorail, stating that it’s a driverless system that is easy to build, where a traditional metro cannot be built. The new monorail in Egypt runs on rubber tires, which consumes 30% less energy and also minimizes noise as compared to traditional electric rails. Also, it was added that it has elevated tracks, which do not obstruct the ground-level traffic; this East Nile monorail connects to Metro Line 3. The future projects, like West Nile Rail, may connect with the 4 and 6 metro lines.

Things to be noticed about the installation of this Monorail

  • It’s one of the milestones for Egypt in transportation technology, as it will be the first driverless monorail system on the African continent.
  • Every control of the rail is managed by a central control room situated at the new administrative capital.
  • The rail has advanced cameras, sensors, fire alarms, communication systems, and advanced tech measures that ensure smooth functioning and also ensure passengers’ safety.
  • The monorail’s biggest advantage for the people of the new capital and Cairo is that it will reduce travel time. It takes only around 60 minutes, as these rails are electric-powered and can reach the speed level of 80 km/h.
  • It is designed to commute around 600,000 passengers every day, one of the practical solutions to manage the issue of congestion in major city axes.
  • It will be one of the attractive options for everyday travelers and frequent visitors who prefer local transport and can reach Greater Cairo in less time with comfortable travel.
  • The new East Nile Monorail is also a sustainable urban transport solution that reduces carbon emissions and prevents air pollution, as it completely runs on electricity.
  • Another benefit of the monorail is that it also solves the issue of heavy traffic jams and reduces pressure on Cairo’s busiest roads; this project has made mobility smarter and more efficient. This overall helps in improving the commuting for daily commuters across the new capital.
