The ticket price for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will increase starting from 1 November. The ticket price will increase by $5 for foreign visitors and EGP 20 for Egyptian visitors. This decision was made after the board meeting chaired by Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy. The decision was made because authorities are analysing the museum’s financial performance and exploring new ways to produce revenue. They are also thinking of expansion options, such as converting an annex building into a hotel and strengthening the museum’s role as a regional training hub.

During the meeting, the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority’s board met at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Capital to discuss the performance of the museum, including the total revenues and visitor numbers since the museum’s official opening in November 2025 through the end of March. The board approved the minutes of the previous meeting and accepted various gifts given to the museum during high-level visits following its opening. In addition to this, they agreed to study a proposal to create a dedicated hall to showcase these donations and gifts.

Additionally, the board also discussed ways to improve telecommunications coverage at the museum and the surrounding area. They gave preliminary approval for the installation of a mobile network booster tower, though this approval is liable to financial and technical assessments to ensure that the tower doesn’t affect the visual integrity of the site or the Giza Pyramids plateau.

The renewal of a memorandum of understanding between the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Tokyo National Museum has been approved by the board, aiming to strengthen cooperation in museum and heritage work.

During the meeting, the plans to activate the museum’s training center were also reviewed. Minister Fathy highlighted the significance of creating specialized and distinguished programs to enhance the museum’s competitiveness and establish Egypt as a regional leader in conservation, archaeology, and heritage training.

A proposal to repurpose one of the museum’s annex buildings into a hotel was also discussed by the board to increase accommodation capacity in the area. Relevant committees have been assigned tasks to complete feasibility studies and determine the best approach for implementing this plan.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is situated on the Giza Plateau, close to the pyramids, and is one of Egypt’s flagship cultural projects. It is also the largest archaeological museum in the world. It is dedicated to a single civilization. Developed over more than two decades, with international partnerships – including Japanese financing and technical support – the museum has over 100,000 artifacts, many of which are displayed for the first time.

The complete Tutankhamun collection is the museum’s centerpiece, displayed together for the first time, alongside collections spanning Egypt’s history from prehistory to the Greco-Roman era.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is a key part of Egypt’s plans to boost high-value cultural tourism. It makes the pyramids and the Sphinx better by getting people to spend more and stay longer. Officials view the museum as important for making Egypt a top global destination for heritage tourism.

As a cultural center, the museum generates revenue in various ways, such as through ticket sales, stores, a future hotel plan, and partnerships. Recent changes in ticket prices have been made to generate revenue. People are also talking about turning extra space into a hotel and expanding the museum’s business in this way.
