Engineers Find Hydraulic Evidence in Pyramid Potentially Solving a 4,500-Year-Old Mystery

The recent studies and past conclusions have suggested that the step pyramid of Djoser is the earliest pyramid built in Egypt by the pharaoh. It was designed by Imhotep, a prominent architect around 4,700 years ago, and stands as a prototype for the Giza pyramid formations. In recent studies, archaeologists have found evidence that the pyramid was built by using hydraulic systems as an internal design, and the chamber looks like a hydraulic system. Also, nearby landscapes and waterways align with this approach. 

According to the ResearchGate article published in August 2024, the Djoser Pyramid is among the 7 oldest pyramids, which were built 4,500 years ago and offer a remarkable imprint of hydraulic engineering, followed by ancient Egyptian architects. The pyramid has 6 stacked layers, which in total rise to a height of 62 meters and originally were coated with limestone. 

The step-like design of the pyramid serves as a ladder and tomb, which will help the pharaoh’s spirit to enter the afterlife. Under the pyramid, there is a 28-meter-deep shaft that takes you to the burial chamber, which also consists of several rooms and tunnels. 

 

About The Hydraulic-Powered Mechanism  

  • The hydraulic mechanism is a technique in which water pressure is used to lift heavier objects. 
  • So, in the context of building the pyramids, the archaeologists have stated that a stone block is placed on a platform inside the pyramid structure. 
  • Water fills a chamber below the platform, and as water rises, the platform lifts upward. Workers then place the block into the pyramid wall.
  • The process repeats for higher levels. The chambers and their design depict that they may be used to create water pressure. 

Evidence that supports the statements is its vertical shafts, tunnels, and chambers, as this design matches the mechanism of the hydraulic system. Also, the surroundings, like the ancient river Nile, water basins, and terrain around Saqqara, depict how water from the Nile has helped in meeting the requirements of water; it clearly shows that the area has enough water. Also, the calculations have depicted that water pressure techniques can easily lift the tons to a very high height. This idea is still in process, and there is no specific proof to believe it as a mechanism behind the construction of the pyramids. 

The ancient Egyptians are famous for their hydraulic engineering, which made canals for irrigation purposes. This has opened a new line of research to find the secret of the construction of these ancient massive architectural monuments.

 

Gisr el-Mudir

The Gisr el-Mudir around the Djoser pyramids is a major monumental structure that resembles the unified hydraulic system. It is also known as the “Great Enclosure” or “Dry Moat,” which is a water treatment facility in which water is potentially managed as fuel, resulting in the construction of the step pyramid of Djoser.  

It is located near the step pyramid of Djoser, has a rectangular shape, and has limestone walls with full-on stone and gravel. The Gisr el-Mudir is known as one of the oldest stone structures, which strongly serves as a check dam that regulates the water flow and protects it from flooding. 

Overall, the location and surroundings support the statement that a hydraulic system is used to create the step pyramid, which is yet to be certified; until now, it’s a conclusion of research done to find the way of construction of Egyptian pyramids.
