What is a Dahabiya Nile Cruise?

A Dahabiya is a traditional, two-masted wooden sailing vessel that has a shallow bottom. It’s inspired by the golden boats from the Pharaonic era and their triangular lateen sails at a 45° angle, and their small size depicts the authenticity of Nile sailing. These boats do not always have engines; the modern Dahabiya sailing vessels rely on wind power or have a generator that produces the electricity that offers slower-paced sailing experiences.

Unlike large ships, the Dahabiyas are smaller vessels and have a limited passenger capacity of around 8-20 passengers; they have fewer but luxurious accommodations serving intimate sailing experiences over the Nile. They also sail between the common and most preferred Nile route between Luxor and Aswan, on itineraries varying from 04 days to 08 days.

Dahabiya vs. Large Nile Cruise Ship

Here’s a quick difference for better understanding about how Dahabiyas are different from Egypt Nile River cruises.

Features  Dahabiya Cruise Large Nile Cruise
Boat size Smaller Larger
Number of guests 8-20 guests   50-100 guests
Atmosphere Quiet and intimate More social and active
Sailing experience Traditional-style sailing Primarily motorized cruising
Onboard facilities More limited but focused Wider range of facilities
Shore experiences May include smaller stops that large cruises ignore.  Usually follows established ports/stops
Best suited to Slow, intimate travel Traditional full-service cruising
